Paul Merton to make cameo appearance in The 39 Steps in aid of Comic Relief

Comedian and Hitchcock enthusiast Paul Merton is to make a very special cameo in the hit West End comedy The 39 Steps for one night only on Thursday 12th March in aid of Comic Relief.

The 39 Steps, which is currently in its ninth award-winning year at the West End’s Criterion Theatre, is a laugh-a-minute, fast paced comedy, with a cast of just four actors playing over a hundred roles through the course of the show. Paul will play the mystery killer and the surprise 5th member of the company, whose hand is usually the only body part seen onstage.

Producers for The 39 Steps will raise money for this year’s Comic Relief by donating 50% of tickets sales to Thursday night’s performance, as well as bucket collections made available in the theatre foyer for audience donation.

His theatre credits include Box and Cox at the Hen & Chickens Theatre, Nanki-Poo in The Hot Mikado at the Watermill Theatre and Nigel in the UK Tour of Salad Days. The 39 Steps announce UK Tour beginning January 2013 at the Cambridge Arts Theatre

As it celebrates its sixth year at the West End's Criterion Theatre, producers of The 39 Steps have announced that it will embark on a UK tour next year. The show is based on the 1914 novel by John Buchan, and was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow. The tour will launch on 19th January 2013 at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. 

The comedy whodunit follows handsome Richard Hannay in his attempt to clear his name and discover the mystery of the 39 steps. The fast paced show features only four actors that portray 139 different characters in 100 minutes.

Details have been announced for the next West End Frame Award. From tomorrow (Monday 5th November), West End Frame readers will be able to vote in a new category entitled 'Funniest Performance in a West End Show'. The 12 nominees are from some of the West End's most popular shows including Mamma Mia!, Loserville, The 39 Steps, A Chorus Of Disapproval, Les Miserables, Rock Of Ages and Wicked. The identities of the 12 nominees will be revealed tomorrow morning when voting opens.

Previously this year West End Frame readers have already voted in five categorises: Best West End Debut, Understudy Of The Year, Most Wanted Actor/Actress To Return To The West End, Best Performance Of A Song In A Musical and Best Rock Musical. 

The 39 Steps grosses over £20 Million in 6 years

The 39 Steps, now celebrating its sixth year in the West End, has grossed over twenty million pounds since it opened at the Criterion Theatre in 2006. It is now the longest running consecutive show in the theatre’s 137 year history.

Based on John Buchan’s 1914 spy thriller The Thirty Nine Steps and adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow (Desmond Oliver Dingle/The National Theatre of Brent), The 39 Steps is directed by Maria Aitken, with design by Peter McKintosh, lighting by Ian Scott, sound by Mic Pool and movement by Toby Sedgwick. The 39 Steps is presented by Edward Snape for Fiery Angel and Tricycle London Productions with the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

You’ve been playing Annabella Schmidt / Pamela / Margaret in The 39 Steps at The Criterion for a while now, are you still enjoying it?
We started at the end of last year and I originally found the thought of a long run in the west end rather daunting, but I honestly can’t believe how fast the time has flown by as it is such a fun show to do. It’s all go the minute the curtain goes up so none of us has any time sitting in a dressing room waiting to be called. I am very lucky that the cast and crew are a delight to work with too. There are only four of us in the cast, namely Andrew Alexander, Paul Bigley and Stephen Critchlow, so it is important that we work well together as the show is like a relay race – thankfully we get on very well indeed!

Kids Week smashes every record in its fifteen-year history!

Kids Week has sold 74,187 tickets in less than a month, beating its total 2011 sales figures and breaking all the records in its fifteen-year history. This means that Kids Week has been completely unaffected by the Olympic Games and proves that thousands of families are preparing to travel to Theatreland during the games - hooray!
