Review: Mrs Henderson Presents at the Noel Coward Theatre

Mrs Henderson Presents
Noel Coward Theatre
Reviewed on Friday 12th February 2016

Mrs Henderson Presents is a charming new British musical. Adapted from the 2005 film starring Judi Dench, the show - which is written by Terry Johnson, Don Black, George Fenton and Simon Chamberlain - oozes with heart.

Tracie Bennett stars as widowed Laura Henderson who takes on an old cinema on Great Windmill Street and turns it into a variety club during the thirties. With war looming and box office sales falling, Mrs Henderson decides that (as the poster says) "for the show to go on, the clothes must come off".

The opening scenes are brilliant; the small ensemble immediately bring life and soul to the stage whilst Bennett's presence, along with Andrew Wright's choreography, provides some old school pizazz. Interestingly I took my seat knowing absolutely nothing about the story which sees four women being persuaded to become 'The Windmill Girls' who pose as nude statues for sold out crowds. Director Terry Johnson has fun teasing his audience, the first scene involving nudity (male as well as female) is superbly staged and received an uproarious response.

Making his anticipated return to the stage, Jim Broadbent stars as Scrooge in Patrick Barlow's adaptation of A Christmas Carol

All in all Phelim McDermott's production of Charles Dickens' classic story is pretty harmless, providing the perfect excuse to nibble on mince pies with a glass of mulled wine in hand. The ensemble showcase versatility as they pop up in various roles throughout, occasionally armed with puppets.

Review: Impossible at the Noel Coward Theatre

Taking us back to the good old days of variety, Impossible is a well constructed magic show perfect for the summer holidays. Showcasing the eight principles of magic - escape, transportation, penetration, prediction, levitation, transformation, vanish and production - Impossible had me screaming, covering my eyes and sitting on the edge of my seat thinking 'how on earth did they do that?'

Following its premiere last year in Sheffield and subsequent UK Tour, Daniel Evans' production of The Full Monty has opened at the Noel Coward theatre and last night proved it is fully deserving of a West End transfer. Big Interview: Kenny Doughty, currently starring in The Full Monty

Kenny Doughty is currently leading the cast of the West End transfer of The Full Monty which opens at the Noel Coward Theatre tonight (25th February 2014).

The Full Monty has been adapted by Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy from his own screenplay about a group of unemployed steel workers who form a troupe of male strippers. The play also stars Craig Gazey (Lumper), Simon Rouse (Gerald), Kieran O’Brien (Guy), Roger Morlidge (Dave) and Sidney Cole (Horse).

Kenny’s theatre credits include: Small Change (Sherman, Cardiff), Troilus & Cressida (Old Vic), Accomplices (National Theatre at Crucible Theatre, Sheffield) and Present Laughter (Royal Exchange).

Just a few of his extensive television credits include: Stella, Paradox, New Tricks, Spooks Code 9, Empress’ New Clothes, Shameless, Goldplated and Blue Murder. Kenny’s film credits include: Snowpiercer, I Against I, The Strange Case of Wilheim Reich, Asylum Blackout, City Rats, The Crew, Irreversi and he won Best Actor Award at Palm Beach International Film Festival for Aryan Couple.

I recently went backstage at the Noel Coward theatre to speak to Kenny in his dressing room about why it’s the perfect time to bring The Full Monty to the West End, the huge response the play receives from audiences and how he felt when his mother-in-law brought a coach load of women from Manchester to see the show…

The Full Monty was a huge success last year. What was it like having a break and then returning to the show? Did it feel strange at first?
It was only strange because I had missed it! We made a few tweaks during the interim and we’ve just had a lovely month back on the road so it was nice to reacquaint ourselves with what we had done before and then come into the West End. This time round I feel like we’ve really got the play back, there were certain moments towards the end of last year’s tour when the theatres got so big that we forgot the story. We had done it so often so it’s been great to re-focus, re-rehearse it and really come back to what the play is about.

Sheridan Smith, David Walliams, Jude Law, Judi Dench plus more to appear in the Michael Grandage Company’s season at the Noel Coward Theatre

A bunch of in incredible actors including Sheridan Smith, David Walliams, Jude Law, and Judi Dench will appear in Michael Grandage Company’s theatre season which will take up residency at the Noel Coward Theatre between December 2012 and February 2014. There will be five productions in total: Privates on Parade, Peter and Alice, The Cripple of Inishmaan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry V. This will offer 100,000 tickets for audiences at just £10.

Speaking about the season, Artistic Director Grandage, who will direct all five productions, and Executive Producer James Bierman, commented: “We are delighted to announce the inaugural season of work for the Michael Grandage Company – a programme comprised of new writing alongside the classical and 20th century repertoire. At its heart is a commitment to reach out to as wide an audience as possible with over 200 tickets for each performance at £10 and through our schools’ and access work we aim to appeal to new theatregoers and help build audiences for the future. This unique West End season brings together writers, actors and other artists in a single venture over 15 months dedicated to presenting work of the highest quality at affordable prices.”

In addition to renewing his commitment to making theatre affordable, which was previously seen when Grandage programmed 2009’s Donmar West End season at the Wyndham’s theatre with the same pricing structure as the intimate Donmar Warehouse, the season of work also picks up the passion for aiding young theatre professionals previously seen at the Donmar. Each show in the season will offer opportunities for young directors and designers to become involved as associates. More information about working with the company can be found at www.michaelgrandagecompany.com

Theatre fans are delighted as they now have the opportunity to see West End Star Sheridan Smith take on two new plays after it was announced earlier this week Sheridan would be taking on the title role in Hedda Gabler at The Old Vic. After the news was announced Sheridan excitedly tweeted 'Thanks guys, honoured to have been asked to play Hedda Gabler The Old Vic & Titania with Michael Grandage. Two great roles, nervous but excited!'

I think this is fantastic news! Many people have to limit the number of trips they make to the theatre due to ticket prices. This season will give the opportunity for people to see incredible actors take on iconic roles at an affordable price.

In John Logan’s remarkable new play, enchantment and reality collide as this brief encounter lays bear the lives of these two extraordinary characters.

Martin McDonagh’s comic masterpiece examines an ordinary coming of age in extraordinary circumstances and confirms his position as one of the most original Irish voices to emerge in the second half of the twentieth century.
