The Full Monty
Noel Coward Theatre
Reviewed on Tuesday 25th February 2014

Following its premiere last year in Sheffield and subsequent UK Tour, Daniel Evans' production of The Full Monty has opened at the Noel Coward theatre and last night proved it is fully deserving of a West End transfer. It is an utter joy to see a new play which is up to scratch and ready for a triumphant West End run.
This new play version of The Full Monty (not to be confused with the musical) has been adapted by Simon Beaufoy from his own screenplay about a group of unemployed steel workers who form a troupe of male strippers. It has been several years since I last saw the film, but as I watched the play the film came flooding back as the two are very similar.
The Full Monty certainly shines as a piece of theatre in its own right and proves particularly popular with audiences. Last night the atmosphere was electric and from what I gather it was not an unusual occurrence. Of course it's important to remember The Full Monty isn't just about six guys taking their clothes off, if you take away the stripping element it is a play which centres around six out-of-work, struggling men who hit rock bottom.

The six leads, all of whom have transferred into the West End following the Sheffield run and UK Tour, have truly mastered their chemistry and portrayals of the six contrasting lads. Whilst tackling some serious issues a funny one-liner is never too far away and the cast's enjoyment rubs off on the audience.
Kenny Doughty (Gaz) leads the cast with charm, wit and cheekiness. The Full Monty is such a great story as the men are so relatable, making the show appealing to both men and women. There are some touching moments between Craig Cazey (Lomper) and Kieran O'Brien (Guy) whilst Roger Morlidge also shines during some very powerful moments. The performance of the night came from Jack Hollington as Gaz's son Nathan (three boys share the role) who owned the stage with natural stage presence.
If you think you would enjoy The Full Monty on stage then you will love this production. It may be safe but it certainly provides a compelling evening which ends with a very loud a bang!
