Press Night Pics: Disney's Aladdin opens in the West End
Last night, (15th June), Disney’s Aladdin celebrated its West End opening at the Prince Edward Theatre.
As well as composer Alan Menken and director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw, guests included John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Tom and Giovanna Fletcher, Andrew Scott, Luke Evans, Cynthia Erivo, Jenni Falconer, Preeya Kalidas, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Katherine Kelly, Ricky Wilson and Rufus Hound. Disney's blockbuster musical adaptation of Aladdin has crossed the pond, two years after opening on Broadway. It's a huge show with a multi-talented cast and big design elements. Similarly to The Lion King, the musical is very similar to the 1992 Disney film it's based on. The show also features some numbers that were cut from the film - most notably 'Proud Of Your Boy' - as well as a few new compositions.

PICS: Rehearsals for West End production of Disney's Aladdin
Rehearsal images have been released for the West End production of Disney's Aladdin. The show opens at the Prince Edward Theatre on 15th June (previews from 27th May) and is currently booking to 1st October 2016. Check out the images below (click picture to enlarge).
The show stars Dean John-Wilson as Aladdin and Jade Ewen as Jasmine with Broadway's Trevor Dion Nicholas making his London stage debut as Genie. The cast also includes Don Gallagher as Jafar, Peter Howe as Iago, Irvine Iqbal as the Sultan, Nathan Amzi as Babkak, Stephen Rahman-Hughes as Kassim and Rachid Sabitri as Omar.

Review: Miss Atomic Bomb at the St James Theatre

Transporting us back to 1952 Las Vegas, Miss Atomic Bomb is a bold new musical with a satirical style not everybody is going to get. For the first ten minutes I sat in my seat wondering what on earth I was watching, but after the first few numbers I embraced the style and found myself laughing all evening.
Taking no prisoners, Adam Long, Gabriel Vick and Alex Jackson-Long's musical finds humour in the strangest of places. Miss Atomic Bomb sees the U.S. military testing its atomic bombs and taking control of the city. Despite an array of characters being faced with life-or-death situations, everyone is far more concerned about who will have their 'life changed' by being crowned the Miss Atomic Bomb beauty queen. It's bizarre, surprising fun.
The piece is still a little rough around the edges, but the supreme cast cover it up well. There are some stand out songs along the way; Dean John-Wilson and Simon Lipkin lead a showstopping tap number in the first half whilst Florence Andrews raises the roof in the second act with her solo number 'The Sun Went Down'. Lipkin is the driving force behind the piece - he can do no wrong.

Big Interview: Dean John-Wilson, starring in Miss Atomic Bomb & Disney’s Aladdin
Dean John-Wilson is currently rehearsing new musical Miss Atomic Bomb before starring in the West End transfer of Disney’s Aladdin.
Dean is creating the role of Joey Lubowitz in Miss Atomic Bomb which is written by Adam Long, Gabriel Vick and Alex Jackson-Long.
Inspired by the bomb tests and beauty pageants of the era, the musical comedy is co-directed by Bill Deamer and Adam Long. Catherine Tate and Simon Lipkin also star in the show which is set to begin performances at the St James Theatre on 7th March 2016.
In May, Dean will originate the title role in the London premiere of Disney’s musical Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre, starring opposite Jade Ewen as Jasmine and Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie. Currently running on Broadway to tremendous acclaim, Aladdin is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.
Dean most recently starred as Man 1 in Songs For A New World by Jason Robert Brown at the St James Theatre and as Aquino in the UK premiere of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s musical Here Lies Love at the National Theatre.
His extensive theatre credits also include: understudy Prewitt and Maggio in From Here To Eternity (Shaftesbury), Zack in Bare (Union Theatre) and understudy Pablo and TJ in Sister Act The Musical (UK tour). Dean recently performed solo shows at the London Hippodrome (with Scott Alan) and Singers Lounge; he reached the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2008.
Yesterday I dropped into rehearsals for Miss Atomic Bomb. After watching a few numbers from the show, I caught up with Dean to discuss his first impressions of Miss Atomic Bomb, West End Frame making his dreams come true and why the last few months have been a whirlwind. Dean also revealed how he reacted when he found out he had been cast in Aladdin, his Broadway ambition and next dream show…
The last time we spoke you were in rehearsals for Songs for a New World – I can’t believe how much has happened since then! Have you had a chance to take it all in?
After doing Songs for a New World, getting calls about Aladdin and Miss Atomic Bomb was crazy – I don’t know whether there will ever be a point in my career again where I’ll be able to say I’ve got two posters on the tube for shows that I’m one of the leads in. I was in New York when the Aladdin news was announced and everybody was tweeting me and Facebooking me all the posters on the tube, but when I got off my flight back I jumped straight in a cab to rehearsals and didn’t see one! I don’t even know when this jet lag is going to kick in – I haven’t felt any yet. I just don’t think this will happen again – what more could you want?!

Dean John-Wilson & Tori Allen Martin announce solo concerts
It has been announced that Dean John-Wilson and Tori Allen Martin will both play solo concerts at the Singer's Lounge in Covent Garden.
John-Wilson will perform two shows at 9pm on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th October 2015 whilst Allen Martin's concert takes place at 9pm on Friday 23rd October 2015.
UPDATE (13th October): John-Wilson's shows have been rescheduled to Thursday 29th and Friday 30th October 2015.

Written by Jason Robert Brown when he was only twenty-five, Songs For A New World has become truly iconic. I had forgotten just how many incredibly written numbers are in the show, which is celebrating twenty years since its off-Broadway premiere.

Big Interview: Dean John-Wilson, starring in Songs For A New World
Dean John-Wilson is currently starring as Man 1 in Adam Lenson’s production of Songs For A New World by Jason Robert Brown at the St James Theatre.
Written when Jason Robert Brown was only 25, Songs for a New World broke the mould of the ‘showstopper’ Broadway musical. The show debuted off-Broadway in 1995 and has since been seen in hundreds of productions around the world. It received its UK premiere in 2001 at the Bridewell Theatre.
Weaving characters, locations and time periods together in one extraordinary evening, this production also stars Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple/Sister Act), Jenna Russell (Urinetown/Merrily We Roll Along) and Damian Humbley (Forbidden Broadway/Merrily We Roll Along).
Most recently Dean starred as Aquino in the UK premiere of Here Lies Love at the National Theatre. His theatre credits also include: understudy Prewitt and Maggio in From Here To Eternity (Shaftesbury), Zack in Bare (Union Theatre) and understudy Pablo and TJ in Sister Act The Musical (UK tour). How familiar were you previously with Songs For A New World?
I think Songs For A New World has been part of every young, tenor’s life since drama school – everybody knows the American cast album. To be honest, I was aware of it but had never actually sung any of the material. Well I did one of the group numbers back in college when I was sixteen, but never sung any of the solos; I had just listened to them. Now I’m really going back to the text and getting thoroughly involved in it. It’s quite fulfilling actually, I’ve suddenly seen a completely different side to my perception of it from when I was younger.

Scott Alan announces September residency at the Hippodrome
Following his recent residency at the St James Theatre, it has been announced that US composer Scott Alan will return to London later this year.
Alan will play a two week residency at the London Hippodrome between 7th and 17th September 2015.
He will be joined by some of the West End's biggest stars, including Ashleigh Gray, Dean John-Wilson, Rachelle Ann Go, Eva Noblezada and Oliver Tompsett. Newcomer Jennifer Owens, who performed 'Anything Worth Holding Onto' during one of Alan's shows at the St James Studio, will also take to the stage for a special concert whilst a special birthday concert will celebrate theatre critic Mark Shenton.

GOSSIP: Natalie Mendoza, Mark Bautista & Dean John-Wilson to star in Here Lies Love at the National Theatre
Dean John-Wilson (pictured right) will play Marcos’s political rival Ninoy Aquino. The cast also includes Gia Macuja Atchison, Frances Mayli McCann and Li-Tong Hsu.
Here Lies Love, which was created by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, traces the astonishing journey of Imelda Marcos, First Lady of the Philippines, from her meteoric rise to power to descent into infamy and disgrace.
