Edinburgh Review: The Reviewers at Nicolson Square

★★

A new musical by students and graduates of the University of Nottingham, the strong concept behind The Reviewers is let down by the writing and structure of the piece.

After receiving a horrific review, aspiring performer Keira Cochrane turns into Edinburgh's most feared critic, demanding money and sexual favours in return for five star reviews. However, when ‘The Critic with No Name’ comes along Keira is desperate to unmask the mystery person.

The Reviewers is overly cheesy. The script features a handful of clever Edinburgh Fringe references, but ultimately there are too many dull ballads and the storyline is flimsy. The cast are ok, there are a couple of standout moments, but occasionally diction is poor and vocals are shaky.

I've been a theatre reviewer for two and a half years and have witnessed some hilarious and shocking things from within the 'critic world'. I've often thought someone should write a show about reviewers so was excited about this musical. Sadly I felt let down by The Reviewers. It's nice and fluffy but could potentially be a million times better.
