Edinburgh Review: Last Christmas at Assembly George Square Studios

★★★

A funny and depressing one-man play, Last Christmas follows Tom as he delves into his past, particularly issues surrounding his family, relationship and career. Matthew Bulgo's writing is down to earth and relatable; Tom is a recognisable character who sees the world for what it is.

The first section of the piece is hilarious and particularly tickled several audience members. Later the play takes a serious turn and becomes intense and, at times, uncomfortable. Assembly George Square Studios are (presumably) usually used as lecture rooms. As I watched the play with a desk in front of me, Pritchard's feet rarely moved from the same spot resulting in me feeling as if I was in a lecture.

Sion Pritchard's performance is strong; his portrayal is complex and suitably adjusts to the darkness which unravels. However, I think this one-man play is yet to find the most powerful balance of fun and grit. At times I felt overwhelmed and almost as if I was intruding on a private therapy session.
