Edinburgh Review: Departures: A Song Cycle at C venues

Eight strangers wait on a platform for a delayed train. One by one they begin to share stories, secrets and desires.

The idea behind this new musical is simple and something anyone can relate to. Day after day we stand on crowded railway platforms with our heads buried in newspapers and eyes glued to phone screens. Making eye contact with a stranger can feel like committing a criminal offence - let alone starting a conversation!

The first half of Departures contains some lovely moments and nice numbers, but overall is underwhelming. It isn't until Matt Bond steps forward and reveals his incredible, classical vocal talents that the piece is taken up a notch. Bond blew me away and stood out for the remainder of the show. The final group numbers are excellent and showcase impressive harmonies - finally the show and company reached out and truly grabbed my attention

Departures: A Song Cycle is an innocent piece of theatre with a lovely message. Its design is the strongest I've seen so far at this year’s fringe. The cast work hard and give it their best shot!
