Unlike many shows, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat does what it says on the tin. It is indeed a 'colourful retelling of the biblical story about Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours'. The best thing about Joseph is that you always know what to expect as over the years the show has changed very little. It is no secret that the price of theatre tickets is soaring through the roof, and as Joseph remains a bright show with a catchy score and wide appeal, I think it is the safest choice you could possibly make when booking a family outing.
Keith Jack gives a strong performance in the title role. I think coming second on Andrew Lloyd Webber's reality programme Any Dream Will Do is the best thing that could have happened to Keith. It allowed him time to grow into the role which he has made his own. I had forgotten just how tender certain moments of the musical are, the beginning section of Close Every Door is absolutely stunning. Not only does Keith have a powerful voice, but when he holds back he sings with such a pure, emotive tone. Joseph is sung through and I think during some parts the depth could easily be lost, but Keith makes Joseph a believable character as he acts every word sincerely.
I had forgotten just how many incredible hits there are in Joseph. Watching the show was like reliving my childhood, it makes such a wonderful introduction to theatre. Joseph has become a tradition, many people who first saw the show when they were kids now take their children to the show and so on. It is so thrilling to see both young children, parents and grandparents leaving the theatre with huge grins.

I have always found the Narrator slightly irritating. The character comes across as patronising due to the way the role has been written. Needless to say Lauren Ingram does her best! The role is a vocal challenge but Lauren owns the score. I thought the show felt a little dated, but it didn't really matter as it is all part of the fun. However, the Narrator's costume could do with a makeover.
There are not many family shows which are of such a high standard as Joseph. The megamix at the end is quite a spectacle and I am still recovering. The cast storm the audience and even the grumpy looking Dads end up singing and dancing along. For an unforgettable family night out make sure you catch this bright, inspiring tour over the coming months.
