Following its sold out run at Camden Fringe Festival in August 2012, Capital City Entertainment are bringing their risqué comedy-drama, 3some, back to the Etcetera Theatre. The play has been expanded and re-edited and returns for a three week run.
Spanning one night into the next morning, 3some tells the story of three thirty-something friends, engaged couple Jenny and Paul and Paul's best friend, Rob. The trio return from the pub following a night out and a drunken game of 'I never' leads all three to the bedroom. But is it just a harmless experimentation, or are there ulterior motives at play? What happens next tests relationships to breaking point as secrets are revealed and lies uncovered.
The play is inspired by real life stories as writer Lisa Gifford, who also plays Jenny, explains. "The situation Jenny and Paul find themselves in; three weeks before their expensive wedding, under incredible pressure from their families and ignoring the cracks in their relationship, is something I think many people will recognise. Everyone is colluding in the charade, but as with all things, eventually the truth will come out in an explosive fashion. The events in this play are based around an amalgamation of both my own experiences and those of several of my friends. Following the previous run, I found audience members sought me out after each show to tell me how much they identified with one of the three characters, and how what had occurred in the play had happened to them in their own lives, to some extent."
A new British web series that has spun off from the play is currently in post-production and picks up the story one year later. The first episode of the series will be released to coincide with the run, in what is understood to be a first in UK theatre.
3some is directed by Paul Linghorn and stars Peter Halpin as Paul, and Euan King as Rob.
