Theatre Gossip: Wicked film to be made "sooner rather than later"

A movie adaptation of Wicked is on the cards "sooner rather than later". Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson revealed during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that an adaptation of the popular Broadway musical remains a priority for the studio, although it has not yet been officially 'greenlit'.

"Wicked has been an enormous win for this company. The way it works, we should be in agreement together on when the right time to do this is," Fogelson said. "But I will tell you I believe that we are collectively moving toward Wicked coming to the screen sooner rather than later."

It was rumoured last year that Stephen Daldry, who directed Billy Elliot, had been targeted to direct the film.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The West End production of Wicked is now in its 7th year at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, booking until Saturday 26th April 2014. The global musical phenomenon has now been seen by almost 5 million theatregoers since its West End premiere in 2006 and is already the 16th longest-running West End musical of all time.

Wicked currently stars: Louise Dearman (Elphaba), Gina Beck (Glinda), Ben Freeman (Fiyero), Louise Plowright (Madame Morrible), Keith Bartlett (The Wizard), Christopher Howell (Doctor Dillamond), Sam Lupton (Boq), Katie Rowley Jones (Nessarose), Hayley Gallivan (Standby Elphaba) and Lucy van Gasse (Standby Glinda).

While continuing its open-ended West End run, Wicked has also recently announced a major tour of the UK and Ireland, which opens at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on 12th September 2013.
