Airswimming
follows the story of two women, Dora (or Dorph, played by Tanya Chainey) and
Persephone (or Porph, played by Alison Nicol), as they each lose their mind
whilst trapped inside St Dymphna’s Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
You
are introduced to the characters with such force that it’s like you’ve known them
for years. Performed in an intimate venue, the staging is simple with minimal
set. The way in which Chainey and Nicol keep the audience captivated from start
to finish is admirable. Both performances are hugely energised and intriguing.
Although
there are many comical moments in Airswimming, the story is predominately sad
and there were several moments where my heart ached for both characters as we
slowly witnessed them loosing their once tight grip on reality. The whole piece is seamless and the acting impeccable,
as the characters slip through time and mental states effortlessly.
Airswimming
is a story of finding hope and happiness in a world without sanity; the cruel
discovery that the only way to stay afloat in their unfair world is to
airswim.
