Ariana Grande will star as Penny Pingleton in NBC’s Hairspray LIVE.
The U.S. pop singer previously appeared on Broadway in 2008, starring in Jason Robert Brown’s musical 13. Hairspray LIVE will be broadcast in the U.S. on 7th December 2016.
Writing on Twitter, Grande said: "Penny has been a dream role since Hairspray opened on Broadway. At 9, I was (and still am) in LOVE w @KerryButlerNyc. hope to make u proud... I’m so honored and beyond excited to be a part of this dream cast...... I will for sure pass out at the table read."
Grande joins Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle, Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle, Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad, Derek Houghas Corny Collins and newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy. As well as writing the screenplay for the live broadcast, Harvey Fierstein will reprise his performance as Edna Turnblad, having originated the role on Broadway.
Hairspray LIVE will be directed by Kenny Leon who helmed The Wiz LIVE last year. He will work alongside the show's original choreographer Jerry Mitchell. It is unknown whether the show will follow the footsteps of Fox's Grease LIVE and be shown in the UK.
Hairspray has music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan.
