In an email to company members, producers Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker reportedly wrote: "We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love."
Featuring a book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, The Last Ship is inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences and his album of the same name. Joe Mantello directed the production which stars Rachel Tucker who is best known for playing Elphaba in Wicked for three years in the West End.
Sting joined the cast of the musical (replacing Jimmy Nail) on 9th December in an attempt to boost ticket sales, but sadly The Last Ship struggled to find an audience. The cast of The Last Ship also includes: Michael Esper, Aaron Lazar, Fred Applegate, Collin Kelly-Sordelet and West End star Sally Ann Triplett.
I cannot praise THE LAST SHIP enough. In its 3-month run on Broadway, it DID find an audience. The New York Times reported that it was taking $600,000 per week in ticket sales. However it was not breaking even. This is a beautiful and magnificent new musical and I'm so glad I saw it twice. Take it to London, where, with the right publicity, it should find the success it deserves.
