As we took our seats I overheard a man say to his girlfriend, "I don't think this will actually be about a guy having awkward conversations with animals he's F*cked." He couldn't have been more wrong.
The official description of Rob Hayes's new played states that "one-night stands are awkward" but "one-night stands with animals are more awkward." However, it turns out watching a play about this surprisingly isn't awkward! Despite approaching all shows with an open mind, I was expecting an hour of cringeworthy theatre but was proved wrong. Awkward Conversations is a cleverly constructed one-man show.
Awkward Conversations is certainly one of the most shocking and eye opening pieces of theatre to be staged at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. It contains some horrific moments as well as witty one-liners. Having recently been wowed by his performance in Johnny Got His Gun, Jack Holden blew me away as Bobby - a guy with “too much love to give". He owns the space and keeps the pace moving, not one section drags or becomes dull; I was kept on my toes throughout.
If you're looking to see something outrageously different look no further than Awkward Conversations with Animals I've F*cked. The title said it all! I began my week in Edinburgh with a lovely children's show and ended it with Hayes's controversial play, proving there really is something for everyone at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
