Curious Incident transfers to Gielgud Theatre following Apollo ceiling collapse

Following the ceiling collapse at the Apollo Theatre during a performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, it has been announced that the National Theatre's production will move to the Gielgud Theatre.

The play will open at its new home on 8th July 2014 (previews from 24th June), with an initial booking period through to 17th January 2015. Those who had booked to see the show at the Apollo will have priority booking for the Gielgud run.

Nick Starr, NT executive director, said: “We are grateful to Delfont Mackintosh Theatres for providing us with another home on Shaftesbury Avenue for the show, which has played to full houses at the Apollo since it transferred there last March. It will be a real wrench to leave that beautiful theatre, but sadly the closure of the gallery to enable its restoration means that the show no longer works economically there. We look forward to renewing our relationship with Nimax Theatres on another show in the future.”

No further details have been given as to when the Apollo will be able to reopen.

Nica Burns, chief executive of Nimax Theatres, which owns the Apollo, described the accident as a “deeply upsetting incident for everyone”. She added: “We are sorry to lose such a wonderful production and wish it well.”

Ticket-holders for performances at the Apollo Theatre will be contacted to offer a refund or a transfer of their bookings to the Gielgud Theatre.

During the lay-off of the production, the NT will be offering free performances of the show for schools and young people, which will be performed by the Apollo cast in a rehearsal room format with "minimal settings and lighting".

There will also be an encore screening of the National Theatre Live broadcast, filmed at the Cottesloe Theatre during the play's original run, which will be shown in UK and international cinemas on 22nd May. It has also been announced today that the show will transfer to Broadway, opening in New York in October this year, with further details to follow.
