Someone Else's Story

Stage Door Records

Meredith Braun has released a deluxe edition of her 2012 album Someone Else's Story which marked her return to performing following a ten year break. She has had an incredible West End career starring as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, Eponine in Les Miserables and creating the role of Betty Schaeffer in Sunset Boulevard. The album features fourteen songs as well as five extra bonus tracks.
I admire the fact that each song has been hand-picked from contemporary musical theatre although I would like to have heard a little more variety on the album and perhaps a collaboration would have been nice to break things up a little. Meredith has a highly impressive voice, her falsetto is stunning and she also has a strong belt. The songs selected showcase Meredith's vocal ability nicely.
The album begins with a version of Someone Else's Story from Chess; I love how Meredith holds back on the track. It is the softest version of the song I have heard which really highlights Tim Rice's meaningful lyrics. Other stand out tracks include the title track from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies and Meredith's effortless rendition of You Must Love Me from Evita.
Although Someone Else's Story is a little repetitive it makes good easy listening and features some wonderful songs from contemporary musical theatre. Meredith sings from experience and always from the heart.
