"It is 1941 and the Second World War is raging. The Germans have taken Paris and occupied France. Casablanca is one of the last free cities. The city is a melting pot of cultures, stories and sights. People are desperate to flee a tumultuous Europe and are looking for safe passage across the Atlantic to the Americas. Amidst the turmoil and the frenzy, Rick's Café Americain is a haven for refugees trying to purchase illicit papers and flee the fast approaching war. On a dark night, amongst the chaos, a world-weary Rick Blaine meets his one time love…"
The Troxy has been completely transformed for Future Cinema's Casablanca. This experience like no other brings to life "the enduring tale of love, exile and adventure".
Upon arrival to Casablanca guards demand to see your papers and identity cards. I did not have a clue what was about to happen. After waiting around in the cold for a while we were finally ushered into the transformed Troxy which looked absolutely divine, it took a while for its beauty to sink in.
For the first hour or so not much happens, people gradually arrive. As people sipped cocktails the glorious band performed magical music from the Forties. The atmosphere was incredible.
As the evening progressed, the drama began to unfold with dramatic chases, speeches and a few gunshots (which took me by surprise). Then we were treated to a few vocal and dance performances before guests were encouraged to take to the dance floor. In a flash everyone was up on their feet dancing the night away without a care in the world. It felt as if I had stepped into a time machine and travelled back to the Forties. Finally people returned to their seats as the cinema screen came down.
There are no words to sum up Future Cinema's Casablanca. While I would liked to have witnessed a little more drama, the evening provides a truly unique experience which is very hard to describe. You will just have to go and see it for yourself...
