"There's a monster in this family... In a contemporary northern town two women, Sam and Caitlin, are locked in a room together following a devastating accident. Caitlin must help Sam face up to the truth of the tragedy by digging into the past and confront the monsters hiding in plain sight. In The Deep Space no one is as they seem."

The Deep Space is a dark and perverse production, pitted with laugh out loud clumsy realism. The raw sex scene and heavily laden plot are not for the faint hearted or for those with delicate ears. The gripping reality left the audience aghast and sympathetic towards the vulnerable female lead, played by Abbiegale Duncan.

The intimate staging cleverly engaged the audience, heightened by actors already in place on stage whilst the lights dimmed for the initial scenes. The bare and subtle set design emphasised the lack of grandeur in the show's startling storyline. With fluid flashbacks of the past, the cast kept the audience guessing as to the unpredictable climax of the play.

With unbelievably startling twists and turns drawing the audience in deeper, the play uncovers a sinister side of everyday life that left the audience in disbelief of the show’s true story roots.

Not all of the cast were consistently high performers, the show was a slow grower and the swearing was profound, but Lila Whelan’s aim as playwrite to stun audiences with the disturbing underworld which resides next door, is certainly fulfilled.

The Deep Space runs at the Old Red Lion Theatre until Saturday 9th March 2013.
