Review: Let It Be at the Savoy Theatre

I had forgotten just how many amazing Beatles songs there are before watching Let It Be. This theatrical concert manages to squeeze in forty of the world’s most successful rock’n’roll band's biggest hits and recreates some of their most iconic performances.

The Beatles' earlier hits proved popular with the audience, especially Twist and Shout which had everyone up on their feet straight away. Let It Be guides you through the Beatles' career before ending with an epic finale. Nothing beats the feeling of being in a packed theatre full of people belting out the "Na Na Na Na's" of Hey Jude.

Unfortunately, Let It Be is filled with missed opportunities. The show overuses projections which seem like a lazy way to keep the audience amused while the cast get changed. The most interesting part of my evening was when I discovered the time line feature in the programme. It is such a shame that this theatrical concert only celebrates the Beatles songs, I would have liked to have had an insight into their career as well. Let It Be is just song after song with limited audience interaction in between.

I was very impressed with the design of the show which makes it visually exciting to watch. A few simple, yet effective, set changes guide you through the various stages of the Beatles' career. The costumes are hilarious and obviously very iconic. Let It Be leaves you feeling very nostalgic.

Let It Be has two casts who alternate performances. The cast I saw were unbelievably talented, the closest thing we are ever going to get to the Beatles. The show is very demanding but the cast coped well and did an outstanding job. I was surrounded by Beatles fans, old and young, who seemed to love every second. People were up on their feet numerous times and having a ball without a care in the world. If you love the music of the Beatles you must book to see this show immediately.

While Let It Be is definitely missing something there is no denying that the show makes a fun night out and I am thrilled that it attracts a different type of audience to the West End.

Let It Be is currently booking at the Savoy Theatre until 5th October 2013. Click here for tickets.
