"Maurice is determined to reach his 90th birthday, which is the day before the diamond jubilee. The Queen, having made him a promise 60 years before, is coming to tea. His wife is convinced he’s never met the Queen. His nurse thinks it’s time he did."

Maurice's Jubilee strikes a perfect, unique balance between comedy and drama. One minute you're laughing, the next you're overcome with sadness. There is quite simply nothing else like it.

Nichola McAuliffe's play is well written, the hilarious one liners don't stop coming and she has created three strong, relatable characters. While several scenes dragged on for far too long, I couldn't help but empathise with each character. Maurice's Jubilee is a very special play indeed.

The Aylesbury Waterside Theatre is a huge theatre but surprisingly the play felt very intimate. For this, credit must go to Christopher Richardson for his design of the show which was captivating. The attention to detail was sublime.

Julian Glover was outstanding as Maurice. Sheila Reid was also strong as Helena, she is one of those actresses who demands an audience's attention from the second she walks on stage. Nichola McAuliffe was good as Katy. At first her performance seemed  shallow but eventually we learnt more about her character and it was touching to see her relationship with Maurice grow.

Maurice's Jubilee is very funny as well as tender and endearing. It is simply amazing to watch a cast consisting of three such experienced actors perform a simple yet heart-warming play which will leave you feeling like you have been on quite a journey.
