Spamalot
Playhouse Theatre
Tuesday 20th November 2012 (Press Night)

"Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes more magical than a Camelot convention, including He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life."
Spamalot is one of the greatest musical comedies I have ever seen. At one point I thought the two ladies sitting next to me would have to be taken out of the theatre on stretchers as they literally did not stop screaming with laughter from beginning to end.
The most important ingredient of Spamalot is that is does not take itself seriously. Spamalot is the ultimate light hearted night out at the theatre. Sometimes it is nice to go to the theatre and see something fun - if that is how you feel then you must book tickets immediately!
Stephen Tompkinson was fantastic as King Arthur. Spamalot marks Stephen's West End musical debut; however he performed like he has been doing it for years. But without doubt the star of the show was Anna-Jane Casey as The Lady Of The Lake. Her vocal talents are out of this world. Anna-Jane has been gifted with perfect comic timing. She didn't even have to open her mouth to have the audience in stitches, her facial expressions were hilarious.
The rest of the cast is full of strong character actors. Each and every single cast member gave an outstanding performance.
I admire the fact that Spamalot manages to stay so relevant - Gangnam Style was even slotted in somehow. At some points I did feel the jokes got slightly silly but at least the story never became too stupid (...but it was slightly stupid). The majority of the music is good and obviously at the end the audience all have to sing along to Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.
Quite simply if you want a fun night out, Spamalot is the show for you. Spamalot is the perfect musical for people who are not so into theatre. Anyone will enjoy it. Fact.
