Review: Phantom Of The Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre

The Phantom of the Opera
Her Majesty's Theatre
Performance: Wednesday 10th October 2012

The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986. Since then it has been seen by over 100 million people across 25 countries. The haunting musical traces the tragic love story of a beautiful opera singer and a young composer shamed by his physical appearance into a shadowy existence beneath the majestic Paris Opera House.

Phantom of The Opera is a show which really has it all - stunning costumes, incredible set and most importantly a strong cast full of extremely talented individuals. Marcus Lovett, who recently took over as The Phantom, is great at playing the iconic role as it really is such a complex role to play. Sofia Escobar's portrayal of Christine DaaĆ© was perfect. Her voice is so pure, I could listen to her sing all day! I also loved Simon Thomas's performance as Raoul. He is another great addition to the cast.

I thought Lara Martins was hilarious as Carlotta Giudicelli, her facial expressions were comedy gold and she really played off the audience. I also enjoyed Layla Harrison's endearing portrayal of Meg Giry. The whole cast were outstanding.

Having never seen the show before I was surprised at how simple yet intense the storyline was. Sometimes older musicals can be famous for being hard to follow or for being long and boring. At no point throughout the show did I feel bored or lose interest. I really got into the storyline as the Phantom's relationship with Christine is so mysterious and complex.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is extremely powerful as well as slightly haunting. The show leaves you wanting more meaning I am now desperate to see the shows sequel Love Never Dies!

Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 26th anniversary on Tuesday (9th October 2012), so it must be doing something right!
