Christmas: A time for present giving, carol singing and eating turkey... as well as falling out with your loved ones, dealing with a family crisis and stressing over the Christmas tree. Although Alan Ayckbourn wrote Season's Greetings back in 1980, it remains funny and very relevant today.

Beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on 27th December, Ayckbourn's black and farcical comedy tells the story of a dysfunctional family as they come together to celebrate Christmas. A marriage in tatters, lust, several misunderstandings and  a disastrous puppet show performance of The Three Little Pigs are just some of the problems the family encounter.

Abigail Rosser shines as Belinda, holding the first act together like glue. She cleverly portrays her character's naughtiness whilst remaining likeable. Her presence lights up the stage and keeps the pace moving. Season's Greetings is an ensemble show and the entire is cast are strong, each having their own bizarre and comical moment.

The design is detailed and brings so much to the piece. If the stage was bare this production wouldn't work. The show is atmospheric and I literally felt as if I was peering into the English suburban house where all the action takes place.

Alan Ayckbourn always writes with great truth. Underneath the farcical antics is a sad and dark storyline. It's an awful expression to use, but his plays really are 'like marmite'. I often hear people voicing their dislike of Ayckbourn's work; quite simply, if you're not an Ayckbourn fan you will not like Season's Greetings. However, if like me you are fond of Ayckbourn's work you will immensely enjoy this superb production of Season's Greetings. I certainly left The Union Theatre feeling much better about my own life!
