Based on the novel by Francis Hodgson Burnett and following a successful run at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington, Aria Entertainment’s concert staging of The Secret Garden has embarked on a short UK Tour. With music by Lucy Simon and a book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, this musical is certainly an interesting adaptation of the well-known book.

The cast give strong performances, with the younger members in particular standing out. Olivia Hallett (Mary) acted and sang beautifully while Finlay Banks (Colin) also gave an impressive performance. Ashleigh Gray steals the show as Martha, the maid and Dickon’s sister. Every time Ashleigh stepped foot on stage her cheeky northern portrayal brightened up the Alban Arena. She also demonstrated impressive vocals which were a joy to listen to. Martin Johnston also shines as Ben Weatherstaff, bringing the character to life on stage.

Fortunately I recently read the book - otherwise I would have found the story challenging to follow at times as it wasn’t always clear what was going on. The lack of set also made it harder to become transported into the magical world of the piece.

Although this production is based on a children’s book, it appeals to both adults and children alike. There are only two more chances to see this beautiful production for yourself.
