Jamie Lloyd to direct UK premiere of Urinetown at the St. James Theatre

Following months of speculation, yesterday (16th September) it was confirmed that Jamie Lloyd will direct the UK premiere of Tony Award winning musical Urinetown.

The production will open at the St. James Theatre on 11th March 2014 (previews from 22nd February) and run until 3rd May 2014. The show has music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis.

Speaking at a press launch held at the St. James Studio yesterday, David Gilmore (Artistic Director of the St. James Theatre) explained that when the St. James Theatre opened, Urinetown was always at the very top of the list of show's he wanted to put on. Meanwhile, Jamie Lloyd revealed that he has had his eye on the musical for many years.

Jamie said "Whilst sounding like a contemporary Kurt Weill score, Urinetown takes a hilarious, off-kilter look at a dystopian future that chimes with our times, exposing the reality that our way of life is no longer sustainable. It engages in a highly pertinent, political conversation, whilst keeping its tongue in its cheek and a beating heart at its centre. I am thrilled that we are introducing this unique piece of musical theatre to a UK audience for the very first time."

Jamie also promised that the cast would feature some very experienced cast members, as well as some musical newbies. Urinetown ran on Broadway between 2001 and 2004, receiving ten Tony Award nominations. The show went on to win Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction.

What could a show called Urinetown possibly be about I hear you cry?

"In a city of the future that has been inflicted with a terrible drought, business tycoon Caldwell B. Cladwell has made his fortune through bribery and the monopolisation of all public toilets. With a brutal police force maintaining law and order, it’s not a place to get caught short! Risk it and you will be sent off to a place no one returns from - the infamous Urinetown. The city needs a revolution and every revolution needs a hero... however unlikely."

Urinetown is produced by Julian Stoneman Associates and The Araca Group with production design by Soutra Gilmour, choreography by Ann Yee, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Terry Jardine & Nick Lidster, orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and musical supervision by Alan Williams.
