January's theatrical round-up

Star of the Month Ramin Karimloo January saw Ramin Karimloo make a long-overdue return to London, performing two sold out concerts in Islington. Proving that he is the best of the best, Karimloo embraced his theatrical background, whilst showcasing his unique style of musical with charm and flair. I can't believe how much varied material Karimloo included in the show without anything sounding out of place. Show of the Month The Mother Following the tremendous success of The Father, Florian Zeller's play The Mother has transferred to the Tricycle Theatre having played the Ustinov Studio in Bath last year.  Centring around a woman with depression who is struggling to let go of her son, Zeller's play is wildly disorientating for the audience. Not only does Zeller shows what it's like to suffer from depression, but remarkably he also shows what it's like to love someone with the illness. The Mother extends run at the Tricycle Theatre

It has been announced that The Mother by Florian Zeller has extended its run at the Tricycle Theatre to 12th March 2016 having opened to rave reviews earlier this week.

Directed by Laurence Boswell, the cast is led by Gina McKee who stars alongside Richard Clothier, Frances McNamee and William Postlethwaite. The Mother transferred to the Tricycle following its run at the Ustinov Studio in Bath last year. 

Anne loved that time in her life when she prepared breakfast each morning for her two young children, Sara and Nicholas. Now her children have grown up and have lives and loves of their own. Spending hours alone, Anne’s world begins to twist around her. Has her favoured son Nicholas really returned to her? And what of the suspicious actions of her husband?

Following the tremendous success of The Father, Florian Zeller's play The Mother (translated by Christopher Hampton) has transferred to the Tricycle Theatre having played the Ustinov Studio in Bath last year. Whilst The Father centred around a man with dementia, The Mother is about a woman with depression who is struggling to let go of her son.

Interview: Richard Clothier, starring in The Mother

Richard Clothier is currently reprising his performance in The Mother which has transferred to the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn following its acclaimed run at the Ustinov Studio in Bath.

Directed by Laurence Boswell, Florian Zeller’s play follows the success of The Father which last year transferred to the West End following its runs at the Tricycle and Ustinov Studio. The cast also includes Gina McKee, William Posthelwaite and Frances McNamee.

Just a few of Richard’s extensive credits include: Play Strindberg (Ustinov Studio), King Lear (National), A Midsummer Night’s Dream & The Merchant of Venice (UK/international tours), Enlightenment (Hampstead), The Way of the World (Chichester), Rose Rage (New York), The Tempest (Sheffield), King Lear, The Merchant of Venice & Hamlet (RSC) and Tango at the End of Winter (West End). 

On screen he has appeared in New Tricks, Henry V, Above Suspicion, Law & Order: UK, Spooks, Singularity, Hippie Hippie Shake, So This Is Romance? and Bye Bye Columbus. I recently spoke to Richard about why reading The Mother for the first time was a baffling experience, how the play is similar to The Father and what makes the piece so powerfully relevant…

When Laurence (Boswell, director) first asked me to look at it I wasn’t really aware of The Father! I wasn’t even aware of Florian Zeller.

Full casting announced for The Mother at the Tricycle Theatre

Full casting has been announced for The Mother which is transferring to the Tricycle Theatre from the Ustinov Studio in Bath. 

Gina McKee, Richard Clothier and William Posthelwaite will reprise their original roles alongside new cast member Frances McNamee. 

The Mother opens on 26th January (previews from 21st January) and runs until 5th March 2016. Laurence Boswell directs.
