John Dempsey and Dana P Rowe's musical The Fix is the first show to run in the Union Theatre's new home in Union St (directly opposite the much loved former' venue). Having premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in 1997, The Fix centres around a fictional U.S. politician who finds himself caught up with the Mafia. You would think certain themes could seem relevant today, but sadly The Fix falls flat in 2016 and is an underwhelming piece.
Nevertheless Michael Strassen's staging works well, it's a slick production with some sturdy musical numbers. The majority of the cast fully commit and give good performances. Whilst a fine actor, leading man Fra Fee seemed to struggle a little vocally on press night. His projection was weak meaning his singing was drowned out by the musicians throughout.
I immediately loved the new theatre. For years the Union has been my favourite fringe venue, and it's an utter joy to see it with a new lease of life. There's a superb bar area as well as much improved toilets. The performance space is interesting, I'm looking forward to seeing how itss reconfigured for different productions over the coming months. My only complaint was that the theatre was unbearably hot which made the show a challenge to sit through - but fingers crossed this can be easily rectified.
Despite strong efforts from Strassen, The Fix doesn't make its mark. However, it's a taste of exciting things to come for the Union.
