Javier Muñoz taking over from Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton!

I'm not throwing away my shot! It has been confirmed that Javier Muñoz will take over from Lin-Manuel Miranda as the title role in Hamilton on Broadway!

Muñoz, who currently alternates the role, will play his first performance as lead on 11th July 2016. Miranda's final performance is set for 9th July 2016.

History is repeating itself as Muñoz also previously understudied Miranda in In the Heights on Broadway before taking over as Usnavi full time when Miranda departed the production.

Hamilton, which runs on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, has book, music and lyrics by Miranda and is directed by Thomas Kail with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. It is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton.

Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Hamilton's score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now.

Leslie Odom Jr, Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldsberry recently received Tony Awards for their performances as Aaron Burr, Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Angelica Schuyler. The current cast also includes Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Rory O’Malley as King George and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton.

Further cast changes are expected to be announced soon.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that the Victoria Palace Theatre will be the room where it happens when Hamilton receives its West End premiere in October 2017.
