The Watermill Theatre has announced its summer/winter 2016 season, the continuation of Paul Hart's inaugural programme as new artistic and executive director.
Hart will direct the Watermill's summer musical, Gershwins’ Crazy For You which opens on 1st August (previews from 28th July) and runs until 17th September 2016. West End actor Tom Chambers will lead the cast as Bobby.
Season highlights also include the world premiere of Ian Hislop and Nick Newman's The Wipers Times, a brand new stage adaptation of the BBC film. Directed by Caroline Leslie and produced in association with Trademark films, The Wipers Times is based on the true story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme and runs from 22nd September to 29th October.
As part of The Watermill’s ongoing Education and Outreach programme, an electrifying 75 minute adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tours local schools and plays at The Watermill from 31st October to 4th November and Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi runs between 9th and 12th November, presented by The Watermill Young Company.
Concluding the season, Bill Buckhurst directs Rufus Norris' adaptation of Sleeping Beauty between 17th November and 1st January 2017.
Hart said: "I’m delighted to announce the second half of my inaugural programme here at The Watermill. Following the success of Ian Hislop and Nick Newman's comedy, A Bunch of Amateurs, which premiered here in 2014, we’re thrilled to open The Wipers Times, to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
"The intimate space of our converted mill will be transformed to the glamour of Broadway for our summer musical Crazy For You and we’re delighted to welcome Bill Buckhurst following his critically acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd in a pie shop to direct an immersive and mischievous Christmas treat for families, Sleeping Beauty by Rufus Norris."
Tickets for the new season are on sale from 16th May.
