Fresh from its recent West End run during which a gala performance was beamed to cinemas around the world, The Rocky Horror Show is back on another UK tour. There is nothing like The Rocky Horror Show; it's not just a musical but a theatrical event with audience members continuing to dress up and heckle throughout. I love watching people who are seeing the show for the first time - they have absolutely no idea what world they have stumbled into.
Written by Richard O'Brien, the show follows squeaky clean college lovebirds Brad and Janet. After their car breaks down they end up in the home of a transvestite scientist who is about to unveil his new creation. It's weird, it's outrageous, overly sexualised and irresistibly fun.
Kristian Lavercombe continues as Riff Raff; despite having played the role thousands of times, his performance still feels fresh - he vocally lets rip during 'The Time Warp'. The girls in front of me practically fainted when Dominic Andersen made his first entrance as Rocky; he has a great voice and is the strongest Rocky I've ever seen.
Sophie Linder-Lee is a dream as Columbia, her freak out is hysterical, whilst Kay Murphy brings lots of pizzazz as Magenta. Ben Freeman embraces the cheesy, cartoon-y style as Brad, he stars opposite Diana Vickers as Janet who I thought was good during the first act but seemed to switch into autopilot during the second half.
The Aylesbury audience took time to warm up; it was certainly the tamest Rocky Horror audience I've ever been a part of, but the show still provided an electrifying and unforgettable evening of escapism. If only every night at the theatre could be as exciting..!
