Cooper will play the notorious Earl of Rochester in the production which runs at the Theatre Royal Bath between 31st August and 17th September 2016.
The Libertine will then transfer to the West End, opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 27th September (previews from 22nd September) for a ten week season. Terry Johnson directs with further casting to be announced.
Cooper famously starred in the National Theatre's production of The History Boys, reprising his performance in the West End, on Broadway and in the film adaptation. Most recently he returned to the National to star in Phedre alongside Helen Mirren. In addition to playing Sky Mamma Mia!, Cooper's film credits include The Duchess, My Week with Marilyn and Captain America: The First Avenger. His next film project is Preacher.
The Libertine was first performed on tour and at the Royal Court Theatre alongside the Restoration comedy, The Man of Mode, which presented another, contemporary view of Rochester. It later transferred to Chicago’s Steppenwolf starring John Malkovich and directed by Terry Johnson before Johnny Depp took the title role in the 2004 film adaptation.
