It has been confirmed that Sara Bareilles' musical Waitress is transferring to Broadway following its out-of-town tryout at the American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts.
Waitress will open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 24th April 2016 (previews from 25th March).
Jessie Mueller (pictured right), who won a Tony Award for creating the role of Carole King in Beautiful on Broadway, will reprise her performance as Jenna. Diane Paulus directs.
Mueller's Broadway credits also include: On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Nice Work If You Can Get It and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress has book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by five-time Grammy Award-nominated singer songwriter Bareilles.
Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition. Her customers, co-workers, and the town's handsome new doctor all offer her conflicting recipes for happiness- but Jenna must ultimately decide for herself.
Further casting is yet to be officially confirmed. The tryout cast included: Jeanna de Waal as Dawn, Keala Settle as Becky, Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, Dakin Matthews as Joe and Joe Tippett as Earl.
