Following a year-long West End run, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is now dazzling audiences around the UK. Set in the French Riviera, the musical - which opened on Broadway in 2005 - follows two conmen as they go head to head to pull off their biggest con, whilst fighting for the affections of millionaire soap heiress Christine Colgate.
Jerry Mitchell's production provides a couple of hours of joyous entertainment. Featuring some fantastic one-liners, the story is enjoyable and proved hugely popular with last night's lively Wimbledon audience. The tour is a little scaled back, but overall the set is slick with various pieces of scenery constantly flying in and out.
Following in the footsteps of Robert Lindsay is Michael Praed who does a stellar job leading the cast as Lawrence. Noel Sullivan has made the part of Freddy his own, creating some hysterical moments in the second act and spicing things up vocally to tease his powerhouse vocals.
Having starred in Legally Blonde, it's nice to see Carley Stenson - who plays Christine Colgate - back onstage in another Jerry Mitchell production (particularly when she steps out in her final pink costume). Her rendition of 'Here I Am' is one of the evening's highlights. Stenson's chemistry with her leading men is superb - Stenson and Sullivan brought the house down with their performance of 'Love Is My Legs'.
I have grown to love David Yazbek's songs, but wish the score featured an extra song which defines the show - it lacks a number which goes above and beyond to make its mark. I came out humming 'Great Big Stuff' and the show ends well with Stenson, Praed and Sullivan letting loose during 'Dirty Rotten Number'.
A classy show with a glittering cast and lots of laughs, it's thrilling to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels delighting audiences on tour.
