In the West End Jersey Boys is known as being the slickest show in town, and the UK touring production - which recently welcomed new cast members - is no different. Almost an identical replica of its West End counterpart, the Jersey Boys tour truly brings West End standards to regional audience's doorsteps.
I will never forget seeing Jersey Boys for the first time and being completely captivated by the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Their journey to stardom was far from smooth; each band member has various skeletons in their closet and brings a completely different dynamic to the group.
Of course, whilst many are unfamiliar with the story, everybody arrives at the theatre ready and raring to hear some of the greatest songs ever written. Jersey Boys takes time to build, but as soon as the group take a leap forward on the road to success and perform 'Sherry' you can feel the atmosphere in the theatre turn electric.
Last month Matt Corner took over as Frankie Valli, having previously alternated the role. Corner gives a fresh performance; he is ballsy in the opening scenes and has a little more attitude at times which works well. Corner's vocals are incredible; his smooth tone has a gentle rasp as he effortlessly glides over the big notes. 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' stands out as one of the evening's most impressive numbers, Corner was fully in the moment and evoked a huge audience reaction.
Sam Ferriday continues to shine as Bob Gaudio whilst Lewis Griffiths comes into his own as Nick Massi during his section in the second act. It's interesting because Nick is the quietest of the boys, yet you can feel the audience growing fond of him. It was a joy to once again see West End Frame Understudy of the Year nominee, Henry Davis, perform as Tommy DeVito. Davis is the leader of the pack, taking to the stage with commanding presence.
As usual the ensemble worked their socks off, showcasing versatility whilst popping up as different characters throughout. Jersey Boys is a prime example of why jukebox musicals shouldn't be written off. It is such a safe option when choosing a fun night at the theatre; the songs are brilliant, the story is intriguing and the cast are superb. If this tour is coming to a theatre near you, there is no excuse not to catch Jersey Boys.

Slick was the key word here! Certainly as good as any West End show and better than many! For a touring company the staging and automation was magnificent.
ReplyDeleteThe choreography was spot on and never a dull moment.
The four lead singers were perfect with wonderful harmony and each exceedingly accomplished in their own range. (They looked good too) The ensemble cast in multi changing parts were equally talented and made their own "business" an interesting piece to watch without taking from the leads. It goes without saying that the music was fabulous with a great band, those famous songs that everyone loves brilliantly performed by all.
A simply wonderful show! Let's hope it returns.
