Harvey Fierstein joins Funny Girl creative team

It has been quite a week for Harvey Fierstein! Two of his shows, Kinky Boots and Casa Valentina, opened in London and now the Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye has revealed that he has joined the creative team of Funny Girl's London revival.

The show opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory later this year starring Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice. It is reported that Fierstein will revise the musical's script, particularly the second act.

Although rehearsals don't begin until 19th October, Bamigboye has revealed that Smith is already working closely with musical supervisor Alan Williams and reading with various performers at final auditions for the supporting cast. Bamigboye confirms the show is aiming to transfer to the West End and that there is even talk of a Broadway transfer... watch this space!

Funny Girl's run at the Menier sold out within hours, breaking box office records and becoming the theatre's fastest selling production. Directed by Michael Mayer, Funny Girl opens on 2nd December 2015 (previews from 20th November) and runs until 5th March 2016.

Funny Girl marks Smith's first musical since she starred as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy Theatre. For her performance, Smith won her first Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Smith previously starred in The Little Shop of Horrors at the Menier. She won her second Olivier Award for Trevor Nunn's production of Flare Path (Theatre Royal Haymarket). Smith's theatre credits also include: A Midsummer Night's Dream (Noel Coward/Regent's Park), Hedda Gabler (Old Vic), Tinderbox (Bush), The People Are Friendly (Royal Court), Ancient Lights(Hampstead) and Into The Woods (Donmar).

On screen, Smith has received tremendous acclaim for her performances in The C Word, Cilla, The 7.39, Mrs Biggs and, most recently, Black Work. Her screen credits also include: Jonathan Creek, The Harry Hill Movie, Mr. Stink, Gavin & Stacey, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Benidorm, The Royle Family, The Huntsman, Powder Room, Quartet, Tower Block and Hysteria.

Please remember nothing is confirmed regarding possible West End and Broadway transfers of Funny Girl
