Questioning the role of 'the hero' in today's society, Angel in the Abattoir is an intense one-man show. Phil Nichol plays a Spaniard in Edinburgh who goes to extreme lengths to care for the love of his life - even when he gets screwed over by her father, becomes her pimp and delivers her baby
Dave Florez's play takes us from extreme to extreme. There are some thought provoking moments, but also a few leaps and gaps in the story which made me question Nichol's character. Hannah Eidinow's production begins with Nichol clowning about, throwing a bag around the audience (representing the Spanish economy). The piece certainly grabs the attention of its audience, and the dramatic finish makes you think, but some of what happens in-between is questionable.
