This marks Smith's first musical since she starred as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy Theatre. For her performance, Smith won her first Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Smith previously starred in The Little Shop of Horrors at the Menier. She won her second Olivier Award for Trevor Nunn's production of Flare Path (Theatre Royal Haymarket). Smith's theatre credits also include: A Midsummer Night's Dream (Noel Coward/Regent's Park), Hedda Gabler (Old Vic), Tinderbox (Bush), The People Are Friendly (Royal Court), Ancient Lights (Hampstead) and Into The Woods (Donmar).

On screen, Smith has received tremendous acclaim for her performances in The C Word, Cilla, The 7.39, Mrs Biggs and, most recently, Black Work. Her screen credits also include: Jonathan Creek, The Harry Hill Movie, Mr. Stink, Gavin & Stacey, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Benidorm and The Royle Family.
