Album Review: Cool Rider Cast Recording

Cool Rider Cast Recording
Released on Monday 29th June 2015

Last year Cool Rider (known to many as Grease 2) began its theatrical journey with a one-night-only concert staging at the Lyric Theatre. The production then returned for a week-long West End residency at the Duchess Theatre and now, due to popular demand, the company have reunited for a cast recording.

Quite simply the musical numbers in Cool Rider are spectacularly incredible. I only saw the show once last April and haven’t heard a single song since... however, whilst listening to the cast album for the first time I could hum along to almost every single tune. It is one of the most infectious scores ever written - and I can't get enough of it!

From the likes of 'Who’s That Guy?', 'Score Tonight' and 'Reproduction' to 'Girl for all Seasons' and 'Rock-a-Hula Luau (Summer Is Coming)', every single song sounds like an old-school eighties hit. Ashleigh Gray lets rip on the show's title number, her vocals are fierce and to say she gives Michelle Pfeiffer a run for her money would be the understatement of the year. The entire cast give strong vocal performances and should be very proud of the album.

Cool Rider already has a massive cult following; the stage show was tremendous fun and has potential to follow in the footsteps of something like The Rocky Horror Show. Although I am (still) yet to recover from the crazy experience of seeing Cool Rider live on stage last year, listening to the cast album has left me dying to see a fully staged production. Let's hope it returns in some shape or form very soon!
