Whilst many may be more familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1996 musical adaptation of Whistle Down The Wind, the Union Theatre have staged Russell Labey and Richard Taylor's 1989 version. 

Although many grew up with Bryan Forbes' 1961 film, I came to the show with a relatively fresh mind which is probably why I was a little taken aback by the randomness of the story - Cathy thinks she is building up a friendship with Jesus who is hiding in her dad's barn. At the start it's a little strange, but the scenes shared between the children and parents bring some touching moments.

Sasha Regan's beautiful production glimmers with old school charm. The young cast give their all and impress throughout. Within the score are one or two musical gems; most numbers are delightful, although I couldn't hum any to you now.

It's hard to imagine this piece working anywhere other than the Union Theatre. Once again Regan has directed a golden production of a forgotten piece of treasure.
