UPDATED: Cynthia Erivo in talks to star as Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway?

Earlier today the New York Post announced that the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of The Color Purple is transferring to Broadway.

They claimed Jennifer Hudson would make her Broadway debut as Celie. However, they made a mistake as it has now been confirmed that Hudson will actually play Shug Avery.

According to Broadway.com, Cynthia Erivo (pictured right) is in talks to reprise her performance as Celie! This is yet to be confirmed. We will let you know if/when anything becomes 100% official.

Oprah Winfrey is producing the production (she also produced the original 2005 Broadway production) which is directed by John Doyle. According to Michael Riedel, Winfrey called Hudson personally to ask her to star in the show. Hudson won an Oscar for her performance in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls.

The Color Purple features a book by Marsha Norman, lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and music by Russell and Willis. Based on the novel by Alice Walker, the musical tells the story of Celie, a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discovers her voice in the world.

Further information is yet to be announced.
