The Tricycle Theatre has announced its new 2015 season.
As well as the previously announced A Series of Increasingly Impossible Acts and Happy Birthday Without You, Lover’s Rock Monologues sees Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson and Victor Romero Evans, return to the Tricycle following their successful run in 2012. Lover’s Rock Monologues illustrates the intimate inside story behind this trailblazing cultural phenomenon, interspersed with the music that defined it. Also returning to the Tricycle stage is Nina Conti, with her new show from this year’s Edinburgh Festival, In Your Face.
As the centrepiece of the new season, Indhu Rubasingham (Artistic Director) will direct the world première of John Hollingworth’s Multitudes – this timely play set in Hollingworth’s home town of Bradford examines one family’s conflict of faith and identity set against the backdrop of a nation questioning immigration policies and confronting who gets to call themselves British.
Following the success of last year’s Tricycle Takeover, the Young Company take over the building for a week. Among this year’s work,Shamser Sinha is penning a newly commissioned play for 22 young actors.
Other highlights of the season include the London première of April de Angelis’ new play After Electra. Samuel West directs the production which opens at Plymouth Theatre Royal in the new year. Following a hugely successful, critically acclaimed run at the Ustinov Studio in Bath, The Father will transfer to the Tricycle, with Kenneth Cranham once again leading the company in Christopher Hampton’s translation of Florian Zeller’s award-winning play. Completing the season, OperaUpClose will make their Tricycle debut with La traviata.
Also announced today, Francis Turnly joins the Tricycle as Channel 4 Playwright in Residence.
Indhu Rubasingham said: "The diversity of new work and new voices across this season is, for me, what the Tricycle is about – from the work of young new voices across the Tricycle Takeover with Shamser Sinha’s specially commissioned play and Sonia Jalaly’s Happy Birthday Without You; to the latest work by April de Angelis with After Electra, and Christopher Hampton’s new version of Zeller’s The Father, both coming to us in London premières after runs in Plymouth and Bath respectively.
"I am thrilled to present John Hollingworth’s first full length play, Multitudes, as the centrepiece of our new season. Inspired by his hometown of Bradford, it examines what is it to be British at a time when immigration is the touch paper of much political and media debate.
"We also welcome the brilliant Nina Conti back to the Tricycle stage and Lover’s Rock Monologues which played at the theatre to great success in 2012. Gracing the stage for the first time is OperaUpClose, originally from Kilburn, who make their Tricycle debut with La traviata.
"In a first for the company, we welcome a Channel 4 Playwright in Residence Francis Turnly who will work with us on attachment for a year. It’s six months of work which we are very proud to present, and we look forward to sharing with audiences both in Kilburn, across London and beyond."
