Coinciding with the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, Disney's stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love follows 'Will' as he struggles to write a play... which will eventually become one of the most iconic pieces of theatre ever written, Romeo and Juliet.

Will falls for noblewoman Viola De Lesseps who has a passion for acting, despite only men being allowed to perform in the theatre. Based on Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard's screenplay, Lee Hall has done a remarkable job transforming Shakespeare in Love for the stage.

There is a cinematic feel to Declan Donnellan's production, but luckily this isn't relied upon and the story excels as a piece of theatre in its own right.

The on-stage musicians and singers provide some hauntingly hypnotic moments as the set sweeps back and forth. Perhaps best appreciated from the Royal Circle, Nick Ormerod's design is simple yet grand, with two levels towering above the stage.

Although Tom Bateman is arguably not as many perceive Shakespeare to have been like, he shines as a romantic hero. Bateman's performance is complex and bursting with charm. He stars opposite Lucy Briggs-Owen who gives a captivating performance as Viola De Lesseps.

Shakespeare in Love's only major downfall is that it isn't yet as fine-tuned or as polished as it could be. The pace isn't always smooth and some scenes drag. Luckily the cast are all strong and rarely leave the stage. The play cleverly appeals to both those who know Shakespeare inside out and those who aren't the biggest fans of his work. As expected there are plenty of clever references, but at the heart of this show is a story of forbidden love.

I think there's certainly room in the West End for a new play like Shakespeare in Love, London theatre was in need of a new romantic comedy. There’s a timeless feel to Donnellan's production and, following a lively finale, you can’t help but leave with a spring in your step.
