It has been confirmed (via the Standard) that Sunny Afternoon will transfer to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre in October following its sell out run at the Hampstead Theatre. The production tells the story of the rise of The Kinks.
Previews begin on Saturday 4th October. Principal cast members including John Dalgleish and George Maguire will transfer with the show.
Speaking to the Standard, producer Sonia Friedman said: “My secret view was that it was very very special but I wanted it to have the best possible birth, without necessarily facing the commercial pressures of opening a new show in the West End. But I was thrilled with the response. It pushes all the buttons. It feels like a celebration of our culture, a celebration of London and a celebration of English music and Britishness."
She also told the paper that they would have transferred the musical sooner; however, a smaller theatre was desired and none were avaliable.
Ray Davies’ extraordinary life story is told with Music and Lyrics by Ray Davies, a new Book by Joe Penhall, Direction by Edward Hall and Design by Miriam Buether. Set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations.
More soon.
