Although it may appear to the outside world that the five Colby sisters all lead perfect lives, the audience of Adam Bock's new play soon learn they don't. The famous New York family have standards to live up to but, with a high profile social event fast approaching, masks slip and things are said some may live to regret.

A character driven piece directed with a glimmer of style, The Colby Sisters of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a play with an identity. The story is almost just an excuse to exploit these fantastic, contrasting characters. Despite being American, the five sisters are relatable for British audiences - there's the control-freak, the sister facing money troubles, the sister who has just discovered her husband has been having an affair, the sister who has a new boyfriend every five minutes and the sister who finds her inner strength to fight her own battles.

The formidable all-female cast quite literally storm the stage throughout. All five sisters have huge presence, which is only enhanced by the intimate Tricycle Theatre. Bock's writing cleverly lulls you into a false sense of security before throwing in an unexpected shock which changes the course of the play. There are more layers to these extraordinary characters than first meets the eye. They continue to surprise throughout, making the play unpredictable.

Running for just seventy-five minutes, The Colby Sisters of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania doesn't drag. It's nice to see something so new and different, although there is certainly room for improvement. Despite the characters driving the piece forward, the script sometimes lacks excitement and perhaps more twists and turns would keep the audience on their toes.

It's been a while since I've seen such a strong character driven piece of theatre. Glamorous yet dangerous, The Colby Sisters of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania could prove to be too close to home for some.
