Based on Émile Zola's novel set in 19th Century Paris, Thérèse Raquin is a dark new musical about a woman who has an affair with her husband's friend, leading to desperate actions and disastrous consequences.

Laura Cordery's design fills the theatre, making it feel even more intimate than usual. Directed by Nona Shepphard, (who also wrote book and lyrics), a cast of twelve rarely leave the stage and are often seen lingering in the shadows. Julie Atherton, musical theatre's reigning Queen of new writing, takes on the title role, showcasing huge versatility. Thérèse doesn't utter a word during the opening scenes, not speaking until she is alone with her secret lover Laurent (played by Ben Lewis). The moment when Thérèse finally speaks out is terrific, but her outburst could be even bigger and more extreme.

The entire cast are exceptional, making it hard to believe you are tucked away in a tiny theatre in Earl's Court. Craig Adam's score drives the piece forward and is performed with great vocal clarity. The three River Women, Claire Greenway, Ellie Kirk and Verity Quade, particularly stand out. Tara Hugo (Madame) and Jeremy Legat (Camille) give fine performances and Ben Lewis' voice is incredible. His duet with Atherton provides a chilling highlight.

It seems a shame that a new musical of such high standard is running for such a short space of time. Perhaps it could find another theatre to transfer to (many of Finborough's recent productions have transferred) but the musical lacks commercial appeal (which certainly isn't a criticism, I found the piece extremely refreshing).

Thérèse Raquin is a very different kind of musical. Haunting, compelling and gloomy, Thérèse Raquin took me by surprise and completely restored my faith in new writing. Highly recommended.
