Away From Home is a profound and thought-provoking piece of theatre. The one man show revolves around male escort Kyle. Despite facing troubles at home and having to keep his profession a secret from his unexpecting friends, Kyle lives a relatively happy life. However, when Kyle is given a job on his day off he isn't expecting to find himself face to face with a premiership footballer, and he certainly isn't expecting to fall in love.
I have never seen a one man show as powerful and engaging as Away From Home. Rob Ward (who also co-wrote the piece with director and designer Martin Jameson) gives a tremendous performance. At times I forgot I was even watching a one man show as Ward imitates the other characters from Kyle's point of view (including his lover, mother, father and best friend) so superbly.
Clever writing opens up Kyle and takes you with him on every step of his journey; you can't help but feel compassion for the character. Away From Home raises some very important issues and breaks stereotypes; it couldn't have opened at a more appropriate time.
