The dirt is well and truly dished by this Dynasty diva.
There are not many institutions in the world quite like the Collins sisters (Jackie and Joan), and with anecdotes aplenty, more dropped names than a Simon Cowell Christmas party and celebrity goss that could make Look magazine blush, Joan is back in London to bare all in an honest and frank behind the scenes look at her life in Hollywood.
At the Leicester Square Theatre, coincidently marking the release of her latest memoir, Passion for Life, Joan appears for one week only in this stripped down and intimate show.
Interspersed with photos and clips from an impressive catalogue of hits and flops, Joan reveals all about the men in her life, most of whom she managed to escape, and also gets a few well targeted digs into the divas of her day. As the show moves forward we whizz through her life spending the majority of the second half on the subject of Dynasty, perhaps her biggest success.
If there were to be a criticism it would be that working to an auto cue is never an easy thing, but on such a long show the constant looks down to the clumsily placed screen became a distraction. However, as the show progresses she relaxes and the chat becomes a little less forced allowing for moments of interaction with the audience and an insight into what might be an honest, human representation of an icon. Joan looks incredible, with her trademark big hair and sequins.
It is hard not to sit and be amazed by the career of this woman who has worked with so many of the greats of showbiz, Bing Crosby, Bette Davies, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, but the show is really aimed quite heavily at the fans. The people who know the work and recognise the characters from a single hairstyle, are definitely going to be the most satisfied. If you are looking for a night of general entertainment then this show many not be your cup of cava but if celebrity gossip and Hollywood insight is your thing then Joan really is the girl for you.
