The Daily Mail has claimed Gary Barlow and lyricist and show writer Tim Firth have been working on a musical version of Calendar Girls. Firth, who wrote the West End play version which opened at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2009, said the new show will be very different.
"It would need to be about the town, the women and the husbands" Firth told Baz Bamigboye. He has known Barlow since they were teenagers and the pair have already penned around 50-60 songs for women of a certain age, although only a quarter would be used (phew).
Firth also said, "The first workshop for this will be in a church hall, and then we’ll see what will happen to it." Disney owns the Calendar Girls rights, but have apparently allowed Pugh to produce the show.
Barlow, who left The X Factor judging panel last year, is also currently co-composing a rumoured West End production of Finding Neverland. The musical, which is adapted from the Oscar-winning film, premiered at the Leicester Curve in 2012 to mixed reviews. Last year it was revealed producer Harvey Weinstein had asked the Take That star to write some new songs for the show. Nothing further has been announced.
