I did not have a clue what to expect as I took my seat at the Union Theatre to see Rodgers and Hammerstein's Pipe Dream as I had never even heard of the musical. Apparently the original production was a huge flop which didn't fulfill me with hope, but after the lights went down it only took a few minutes for me to fall in love with the show. Pipe Dream provides a few hours of old-school theatrical bliss.

Following the Second World War, Pipe Dream is set against the backdrop of a recovering America and follows the unlikely love story between Doc and Suzy. The lead roles are played superbly by Kieran Brown and Charlotte Scott (pictured above) who both give masterclasses in musical theatre.

Kieran Brown
Kieran's portrayal of Doc is hard to fault and his vocals are always spot on. Suzy is a feisty character who thinks she knows what she wants. It would be easy for the character to become irritating but Charlotte prevents this from happening. She always has a twinkle in her eye, gently exposing Suzy's vulnerable side. Charlotte also shines during her solo numbers, her voice is stunning.

Virge Gilchrist is fantastic as Fauna and the whole ensemble, who are on-stage throughout most of the show, are a joy to watch. Sasha Regan's direction makes the piece very atmospheric while Lizzi Gee's choreography captures the era beautifully.

The Union Theatre is fast becoming my favourite London fringe venue, I am yet to see a bad musical at the theatre which sets the standard for the rest of the fringe. Apart from the size of the performance space and the cost of the ticket, there really is little difference between seeing a show at the Union and seeing a show in the West End. Therefore it is incredibly important that London theatre-goers support such a high quality production.

Pipe Dream is not groundbreaking, neither is it majorly gripping. The story is a little predictable but it is all part of the fun. Pipe Dream is a heartwarming show which provides a few hours of escapism, if you want to see it make sure you book before the run sells out!
