Dreamboats and Petticoats is a jukebox musical which features Rock 'n' Roll hits from the fifties and sixties. The show features songs by Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Neil Sedaka, Eddie Cochran, Dion and Del Shannon, among others. Set in 1961, the show follows the predictable relationship between young musicians Bobby and Laura who enter a songwriting competition.
Dreamboats and Petticoats is very lighthearted. I've always thought that Dreamboats and Petticoats makes a great alternative family show as parents will enjoy the music while children will enjoy the 'High School Musical meets Rock 'n' Roll' style story.
I saw the musical in the West End last year and must admit that this touring production feels tired. The set is scaled down and looks a little cheap while the cast seem to have lost their sparkle, many giving 'robotic' performances. The cast are fairly small so have to work hard keep the pace of the show going. The second half is much better than the first, the script becomes wittier but it's too little too late.
The on-stage musicians (who double up as actors) are absolutely incredible. Their energy and passion lights up the stage, and the playout music at the end of the show is electrifying. Dreamboats and Petticoats is a nice musical but, quite simply, there are better shows. Fans of the Rock 'n' Roll era will love every second but if you're looking for a high quality evening at the theatre there are better options.
